Whilst researching ingredients for other sport related products, the sport scientists from Science in Sport discovered two functional ingredients one a brain nutrient, the other a liver nutrient. Hedstart combines the re-hydrating properties of the sports drink, with these brain and liver nutrients, and balances the well documented increased need for certain micronutrients caused by alcohol consumption.

Hedstart addresses the particular nutrition requirements naturally brought on by alcohol consumption

Hedstart does not treat or cure a disease. We do not have enough medical evidence to market Hedstart as a hangover cure, here are the ingredients....

Phosphatidylcholine and Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylcholine is the major cell membrane building block it is essential for the structural integrity and functionality of all cell membranes.

Phosphatidylserine is a useful dietary supplement for memory, learning, concentration, and behaviour (including negative mood and coping with stress). Crook and colleagues showed that phosphatidylserine can reverse the effects of ageing on then brain in terms of learning and recall.

The Sulphur Amino Acids

Cystein has its most important role in the liver where according to Braverman and colleagues it,

"…helps the small but ubiquitous protein glutathione to detoxify carcinogens and other dangerous chemicals, and in all the rest of the cells of the body, where it serves as the major scavenger of hazardous oxidants."

Cystein is the major amino acid which determines how much glutathione is produced by the body. Glutathione is arguably the most important water soluble anti-oxidant and de-toxifying agent. (Braverman et al 1997)

Taurine protects cell membranes by attenuating toxic substances and/or acting as an osmoregulator (Young and El-Khoury pg214)

Methionine is an essential sulfur containing amino acid. It is thus useful in neutralising the toxin acetaldehyde and is another precursor to the anti-oxidant glutathione.

Glutamine

"It has been conclusively demonstrated that supplementation with glutamine improves nitrogen balance, enhances the rate of protein synthesis, supports immune cells, and maintains integrity of the mucosa" Furst and Stehl.

Glutamine – conditionally essential in various catabolic states, glutamine facilitates cellular hydration pg. 406

Terms

Glutathione – one of the bodies major anti-oxidants. Tripeptide made up of the amino acids gamma-glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine.
